My husband and i recently tore the carpet from our stairs and painted the wood underneath creating a fresh clean and modern look.

Removed stare tacks and staples using a crowbar hammer and flat head screwdriver pliers would work too.

You will do lots of pulling and slicing to get the carpet off.

Using a varnish stripper remove the top coat from the stair treads.
The staple remover that i used was bought for stripping upholstery but it made the job so much easier.

Each piece of carpet was also wrapped around the edges of the stairs and around the balusters so i had to remove the staples holding it in place from underneath green arrow below.
If you can remove any obstacles on your carpet if needed.
Here is a quick rundown of what i did.
Pulled up carpet and padding using gloves i used a pair of gardening gloves cutting the carpet with a box cutter.
Work in sections about two steps at a time so you are not left pulling on a huge mound of carpet.
Sand the wood using multiple grit sandpaper.
