Tech Binding Ski Boots

These ultralight bindings replace the traditional alpine toe piece with two pins that lock into tech compatible ski boots. Our testers agreed the stiffest boots were the lange xt freetour. Walking in ski boots can be a rather slippery affair on some surfaces. Repurposing the design as a freeride binding is problematic. For the uninitiated ski bindings are the piece of tech that holds your boot to the ski. This means you won t have to replace your boots.

That might not sound like the most interesting piece ofequipment but getting the right one can make a huge difference to your skiing game. In order to reduce variables we made sure to make at least a few direct comparisons using the exact same skis and bindings. The kingpin tecton plum summit and g3 ion lt all have stack heights over 39mm. For beginner skiers it s really just about connecting your boot to the ski and making sure it comes off in a crash.

Tech bindings originally released by dynafit in 1986 are quite different from their framed counterparts. The more sophisticated tech bindings have a greater stack height. If you have a hard soled boot we throw on custom rubber tread lifters for better grip and protection. However testing realities dictate that we can t use every boot with the same exact ski and binding set up.

This is an important distinction as standard alpine and touring boots are not compatible with tech bindings. Tech bindings were originally designed for ski touring and ski mountaineering using narrow skis and soft ski mountaineering boots of the 1980s. They are also sometimes called dynafit inserts and require bindings designed for tech inserts iso 13992 certified. Cast boot conversion allows you to keep rocking the alpine boots you know and love while adding tech compatibility for super efficient touring.

But the new gripwalk sole and binding system turns a conventional ski boot into a real performance miracle. This is particularly achieved by the excellent grip rounded high profile soles and the gripwalk binding components perfectly tailored to them. Instead of fins on the binding that hold the boot in place tech bindings use metal pins that connect directly to steel inserts in the boot.
